What is the best bourbon and why?

My friend loves bourbon and I want to get him some for his birthday coming up but I know nothing about bourbon. For example, if we were talking about scotch I'd get him Macallan 18 or something but does anyone drink bourbon out there and know what I should get? Thank you.
