Question about ovulating?

I never have clear stretchy cm during my cycle unless im on my period..could this mean that this is when i ovulate, or does cm not have to be present for me to be ovulating? In the middle of my cycle though although no cm i do get sharp twinges in the lower part of my stomach not caused by an infection..so what do you think?
