If a country has a high agricultural density, is it more likely to have small farms or large farms?

In the United States, there has been a dramatic shift from small farms to large farms since the 1950's. However, farm acreage has been about the same. Small farms cause a slight increase in farm land density because they tend not to be as efficient as large farms. The answer would be small farms contribute to higher agricultural density because they lack the efficiency of large farms.
