Whenever it rains alot my basement floods. What are some way in order to prevent the flooding?

I do not have a walk-out basement. So whenever it rains heavily, the drainage at the bottom of the stairs can not handle the amount of rain so my basement floods. At first, only the carpet in front of the doors used to get wet but now the carpet in the middle of the room is also getting wet. I was thinking about putting up an awning to cover the drainage but it cost around 4000. Is there any other techniques to prevent the flooding?
